PESHAWAR: The dwellers of blast-devastated Shah Hassankhel village in Lakki Marwat district did not observe ‘black day’ as planned earlier owing to fear of another bomb attack.
Peace Committee of Shah Hassankhel had decided to observe ‘black day’ on January 1, 2011, which marked the first anniversary of the suicide attack in the village where over 100 villagers were killed and scores injured.
Chairman of the Peace Committee, Shah Hassankhel village in Lakki Marwat district Mushtaq Ahmed Saturday said the local administration and officials of the security forces asked them not to observe the ‘black day’ in a bid to avoid any untoward incident.
Talking to The News by phone from his village, he said the villagers observed only token protest to mark the tragic incident of last year. “If our peace committee was not there, the situation in the district would have been definitely different,” he claimed, adding that the committee members had been cooperating with the government but the latter had not yet honoured its promises with the villagers.
He said the district administration nabbed a number of militants after they were pointed out by the committee but most of them were released. “Those who were released are now flexing muscles and threatening the committee members” he said.
